Looking out my window, I see a pretty young boxer running across the park. A few minutes later, I see him out in the lake struggling to get out.
Running for my phone, I called 9-1-1, summoned help. Next stop, I'm outside trying to coax him in to safety. The rope on the safety line was fixed to the pole; I had to run back inside for a knife to cut it free -- I threw it out on the ice hoping for a miracle but the line was too short.
I watched him struggle, try to keep his head above water, and respond to my shouts, but the water was too cold, the effort was too great, and just before I heard the sirens, I saw him go under for the last time.
I watched a dog die today, and it didn't have to happen. It shouldn't have happened. If you're missing a pretty young boxer today, now you know how he spent his last moments.

Unfortunately my husband and I were taking our dog for a walk and passed the firefighters and divers just as they were pulling the body from the lake. We too were angered by this senseless death, having just put to rest our very beloved dog of fourteen years a day earlier. Please keep your pets safe - it IS your responsibilty.
